Sablefin Hatcheries Ltd. was established in 2002. The Company's primary objective is to provide high quality sablefish (blackcod) fry to British Columbian, as well as other North American fish farming companies. Funding for the initial stages of construction and operations was raised through a Venture Capital Corporation (Sablefin Hatcheries VCC Ltd.). The majority of the companys shareholders are residents of British Columbia, Canada.
At the hatchery on Saltspring Island a close-knit team of technicians is employed in fish production as well as in relevant R&D. Most of the companys technicians have post- secondary education in science related subjects. They receive training on site in marine fish hatchery technology and are proficient in all aspects of hatchery operations.
Sablefin Hatcheries Ltd. was founded and is managed by Gidon Minkoff (Ph.D Aquaculture, University of Stirling). Dr. Minkoff has been involved in hatchery production of marine fish species since the early 80s. His career has evolved from initial work with warm water species (seabream, seabass, red-drum and Turbot) and diversified into cold water fish such as Atlantic cod, hake and sablefish. He has worked on five continents at the technical and managerial levels as well as a consultant. His methodology makes the connection between the natural sciences and the practical technology required for operating a successful fish hatchery.
